Sotonas are living creatures - young girls. Each of them has a set time - it means that during the night, always at the same hour, sotona goes numb. Her body looks dead, and her soul is transported into a cat or a white mouse. In this form she slips off to see her lover, to suck out his blood, youth, and vitality.
